Client Success Story: Graham, Carport Customer
Location: Bellbowrie, QLD
Scope: Elevated flyover patio to complement new deck and traditional shingle style home
Goal: Shade from the sun, clear views, and a seamless, non-intrusive design
Graham’s new deck was beautiful, but Queensland’s harsh sun made it virtually unusable during summer. “The heat through summer was too much to bear. I had to do something,” he recalls. What he needed wasn’t just shade: it was a solution that would preserve his stunning garden views while respecting his home’s character.
Graham explains his experience here;
The Challenge
Graham had just finished building a stunning new deck but without cover, it was exposed to Queensland’s harsh sun. He wanted to protect the space and make it more comfortable to use, without blocking the view. Just as important, it needed to complement the Shingle-style architecture of his 40-year-old home.
This wasn’t just any home, Graham had been part of the original design and even worked on the build himself. Getting it right mattered. The patio couldn’t look like an afterthought. It had to feel like it had always been there.
To complicate things further, the deck narrowed as it approached the house and ran at an angle, with a staircase positioned exactly where a standard post would usually go. A stock-standard solution simply wasn’t going to cut it.
Our Lifestyle Patio Solution
Design consultant Sam knew this project required both technical expertise and creative problem-solving. During his first site visit, Sam worked directly with Graham to map out the constraints, then collaborated live with our product manager to ensure the concept would meet both structural and aesthetic requirements.
Sam’s approach meant Graham could see his vision taking shape in real-time, with immediate feedback on what was possible:
- Engineered an angled beam to avoid placing a post in the staircase pathway
- Adjusted the roof incline to maximise shade coverage without compromising the deck’s elevation
- Selected slimline flyover brackets to maintain clean lines and avoid box gutter requirements
- Matched design elements to tie seamlessly with the existing home’s character features

The Result

The finished patio feels like it was always meant to be there. It blends seamlessly with the home’s character, complements the deck, and creates a functional space Graham can enjoy in all weather.
Graham had looked at a wide range of options before choosing Lifestyle Patios. What sealed it for him was the durability, design alignment and ability to enjoy his deck properly year-round.
“The heat through summer was too much to bear. I had to do something. I looked at a wide range of options and finally settled on something more permanent and weatherproof. This flyover roof from Lifestyle Patios has just been a fabulous solution.”
He now uses the space comfortably, even during storms or hot days.
“If it was raining, I couldn’t come out here. This, with the lighting and the fan, has just provided that. We’ve had a reasonable amount of heavy rain recently and it’s stood up so well. I just love it.”
The elevated deck overlooks a lush garden and leafy surrounds. The new roof protects that outlook while enhancing the space below. With the incline and beam placement designed specifically around the site’s angles, it all ties in beautifully.

For Future Customers
This project shows the value of working with a design consultant who knows how to listen, problem-solve, and tailor the structure to suit both the site and the home. It’s not just about building something that fits. It’s about designing something that belongs.
Graham’s project highlights why experience with complex installations matters. When evaluating patio companies, ask these specific questions:
- “How will you handle structural obstacles like stairs or existing features?” Look for companies that visit the site and propose specific engineering solutions, not generic workarounds.
- “What’s your experience with heritage/character zone approvals?” Many companies avoid these projects. You want someone who understands the regulations and has successful approvals to show.
- “Can you show me similar projects with angled or custom beam work?” Photos of previous complex installations demonstrate real capability beyond standard rectangle patios.
- “Will your design consultant work with me on-site to finalise details?” The best solutions come from collaboration, not predetermined packages.
A thoughtful approach upfront leads to better results every time. If a company can’t clearly explain how they’ll handle your specific challenges, keep looking.
